Main Differences

Ethereum and Algorand are two of the many blockchains that exist in the world today. Here is a list of the main differences.

Algorand and Ethereum: What are their main differences?

Each blockchain has its own native currency that plays a critical role in incentivizing good network behavior. Algorand’s native currency is called the Algo. Ethereum native currency is called ETH.

Metamask works on the Ethereum network and Pera Wallet works on the Algorand network.

Proof of Stake

Both Algorand and Ethereum employ a consensus algorithm called Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS), which does not involve mining at all. They are know both committed to sustainable development.

Transactions:

The Ethereum platform can process a new block of transactions approximately every 12-14 seconds. Transactions processed via the Algorand network are finalized faster, within about four seconds.

Wallets

While MetaMask is a Chrome extension and a native app, Pera Wallet only operates as a mobile app, even though if you are on desktop you are able to use your phone by opt-in. PeraWallet can only be used on Algorand Marketplaces, while MetaMask allows you to use Ethereum and at the same time allows you to integrate with different blockchains. You can read more about MetaMask here.

Transaction Fees

Algorand fees are calculated based on the size of the transaction and a user can choose to augment a fee to help prioritize acceptance into a block when network traffic is high and blocks are consistently full. There is no concept of gas fees on Algorand.

Eheruim's energy consumption is much higher than Algorand's due to the proof of work.
